Walter Raleigh Somerville Jr.Walter Raleigh Somerville Jr.’s record of service and accomplishment is truly exemplary. Like his fellow UMUC alumni, he overcame the difficulties of balancing career obligations with study, completing his degree through night classes on the GI Bill. Most of Somerville’s life has been spent in service to his country—first in the Air Force and then through a 42-year career in the federal government. As assistant commandant for the Coast Guard, he worked tirelessly to make certain that those with skill and ambition had the opportunity to advance as far as they wanted in their chosen professions regardless of race, upbringing, or financial means. A born visionary, he developed programs that promoted a Coast

Guard culture that valued diversity. His civil rights doctrine became a model for other branches of the military and many federal agencies. Recognizing that many do not have the financial resources to attend college, Somerville endowed a scholarship fund at UMUC that will provide tuition assistance to those with financial need. For exemplary achievements and service, to UMUC and his country, it is our privilege to present him as the University of Maryland University College Distinguished Alumnus of 2008.

David KellyDavid P. Kelly ’95 is truly the backbone of the Alumni Association’s International Management (IMAN) Chapter. As president of the IMAN Chapter, Kelly has been instrumental in developing activities and tools to help students and alumni advance their careers in the international market. He conducted the first all-day IMAN career workshop. He also makes himself available to students and alumni through our innovative online community. An associate director for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Kelly is a consummate professional who brings immeasurable value to the Alumni Association. For his ongoing strong leadership of the IMAN Chapter and his significant contributions in support of the Alumni Association and UMUC’s mission, we honor David P. Kelly as our 2008 Edward A. Parnell Outstanding Alumnus Service Award recipient.
