The Department of Microbiology at Shandong Agricultural University has a long-standing history. In 1947, the curriculum of Agricultural Microbiology, Bacteriology and Mycology was established in Shandong Agricultural University. In 1952, microbiology teaching and research group was established. In 1994, the department of microbiology was established. Many well-known scholars and professors, such as Wennan Li and Yucheng Fang, had made significant contributions to the development of the department of microbiology. Currently, there are 18 faculty members in the department, including 6 professors, 8 associate professors and 4 lecturers. Among these faculty members, there are 6 doctoral supervisors and 14 master supervisors.
The department specializes in all levels of education programs for undergraduate, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. The degrees offered by the department include bachelor's degree in biological engineering, master's degree in biological engineering, master's degree in microbiology, doctoral degree in microbiology. The department also provides opportunities for postdoctoral fellows majored in biology. The applied bioengineering undergraduate program has been prioritized as A-class major to support its development in Shandong Province. The undergraduate program in bioengineering is also considered as the first few application-oriented majors in Shandong province.
We focus on the major problems in microbiology related to agriculture, environment
and food, and we have been doing relevant scientific research based on internationally recognized cutting-edge technology. The five major research disciplines include resources and environmental microbiology, fungi resources and applications, food microbiology and biosafety, molecular microbiology, and agricultural microorganism technology. Multiple research projects have been carried out for programs such as national key research and development plan of China, National Science Foundation of China, national science and technology support program, national special projects for genetically modification, research start-up fund for returnees by the Ministry of education and Shandong Natural Science Foundation. In recent years, more than 20 national service patents have been obtained, and more than 10 provincial and ministerial or higher level scientific and technological achievements have been awarded. More than 30 agricultural microbiological agents have been obtained, and more than 300 research papers and 15 monographs were published. The outstanding research in microbial fertilizer and edible fungus engineering have been applied in industries, which has made important contributions to the sustainable development of microbial fertilizer and edible fungi industry in China.
The Department of microbiology offers many excellent teaching and scientific research platforms, which include the National Engineering Laboratory for efficient utilization of soil and fertilizer, the national experimental teaching demonstration center for agricultural biology, the Key Laboratory of agricultural microbiology in Shandong Province, the provincial laboratory of biotechnology and engineering, and the innovation center of microbial fertilizer of Shandong Agricultural University.
The department is devoted to build the first class and international key disciplines. The department has been facilitating programs for international exchanges and cooperation, and will continue to facilitate training of faculty and professors, development of education programs, scientific research and social services. The department also will aim for producing a number of inventions, more academic papers with better domestic and international impact, and highly applicable industrial patents. The research on patents of new products and new technologies will hopefully form its unique characteristics and advantages in the fields of microbial fertilizers, microbial pesticides, food and medicinal fungi, biological safety and other fields, and it will make greater contributions to the national biological industry, green agriculture and sustainable agricultural development.
